When The Simpsons meets The Movies

The best TV show of all time (don’t argue) always has a plethora of movie in-jokes and references that sometimes fly right over your head whereas others can’t be missed. When they do it right it adds to the story or is the story, instead of just being there for a bit of filler.

Here are the five best Simpsons movie references..

5. ‘Bart the Murderer’

Bart joins Fat Tony’s gang in a great parody of Goodfellas, with Bart’s rise mirroring Ray Liottas character in the film.

4. ’22 Short Stories about Springfield’

Featuring numerous Pulp Fiction references, not to mention the narrative structure of the entire episode is based on the film. The best has to be the torture scene.

3. ‘Itchy and Scratchy and Marge’

A spot on shot for shot parody of Hitchcock’s 1960 classic Psycho, complete with Bernard Hermann’s classic score.

2. ‘Treehouse of Horror’

An entire segment of this Halloween episode replicates the 1980 horror classic ‘The Shining’. Or is it ‘the Shinning’?

1. ‘I am Spelling as fast as I can’

Mimicking the editing style of Darren Arronofsky’s Requiem for a Dream, this scene is such a joy to behold for fan’s of the movie as Homer tucks in to his drug of choice – The Ribwich.

There’s the Top 5. Hopefully there have been some different choices than the usual ones. I had to leave other greats such as Bart dressing up as Alex from A Clockwork Orange, The many Citizen Kane references, Sideshow Bob’s entire Cape Fear parody, the list could go on and on. What are your favourites?
