Many an awards-bait film has been released over the past couple of months. Here’s a quick roundup of the ones I’ve had a chance to check out.
Shutter Island (Scorsese)
Scorsese teams up with regular collaborator Leonardo Di Caprio for his tense adaptation of Denis Lehane’s acclaimed book. Scorsese churns out a visually dense and interesting film from a script that in a lesser directors hand could have been a bog standard thriller. Tonally, it’s closer to Cape Fear than any other film in Scorsese’s canon and this is not a bad thing. The ‘flashback’ scenes are moments of pure cinema – beautiful visuals and great sound mixing, alongside a haunting score. Di Caprio, predictably gives another great performance and there are some great supporting players thrown into the mix such as Mark Ruffalo, Patricia Clarkson and Ben Kingsley.
